Re: recording EQ, compressors, etc plugins
Not sure I understand why it would be important that it happens "before" you're tracking. But, if what you want is to "save CPU/memory" by not having so many plugins running later on when you're mixing, you can put in whatever plugins you want in the channel, record the guitar pa...

Re: Distortion plugin for voice
Why not use a guitar amp simulator like you were using before? I've done similar stuff using Guitarix's lv2 plugins. You can also try KPP... I usually like doing this on a parallel channel, so I can drive the amp simulation harder, but mix it in with the "clean" signal to get more clarity.

Re: Beast
Just tried it out for a bit, played around with the new UI, looks very promising! On the other hand: I wouldn't trust a developer who chooses HTML + CSS + Javascript for UI design, especially in applications that require to be responsive to the point of being actually real time. Dig it 6 feet under ...

Re: Beat making applications for Linux.
Not sure what you mean by "beat making", but if you're willing to go "closed source / commercial", I've been using Waveform and enjoying it quite a bit. The MIDI editor is very good and comfortable to work with, there's also a rhythm / drum parts editor that's very simple but ver...

Re: Guitarix as a plugin?
This is great, thank you so much! I can load the Carla generated LV2 in Ardour and everything works great. Only caveat, state is not persistent between sessions. If I save the session and quit Ardour, when I reopen, the plugin is still in the track, Guitarix is back to it's "default" state...

Re: vcvrack.com - open source modular
Third party Rack plugins should be installed in the ~/.Rack/plugins/ folder. Doing that, I'm failing to load modules, but if I check the logs (~/.Rack/log.txt), I see these relevant lines: [info] Loading plugins from /home/fran/.Rack/plugins [warning] Failed to load library /home/fran/.Rack/plugins/...

Re: Decent but inexpensive powered near-fields
I was dealing with similar constraints than you (room size and budget) and I ended up buying the Presonus Eris E4.5. I like them a lot. Granted, speakers of that size just won't give you enough bass, but they're fairly transparent monitors otherwise. I enjoy working with them a lot. At least here in...
