Re: Unplugging the power from a Raspberry Pi?
I've developed a few systems that could withstand power outage any time with linux. Flash obviously better than spinning hard-drive. Although the flash providers will warn you that you can get in a corrupt state with random shutdown, it rarely happens. Whereas spinning hard-drives I've had serious p...

Re: Atom netbook vs new PC vs handy recorder thing
Hi Chris. I can recommend the Zoom H1. I just tested this for you, I recall reading that it can function as an audio interface. So I tried that out on Linux, and it worked at 16bit/44khz stereo. I had to upgrade the firmware, that is easy enough to do. You do need an older style mini USB cable(sligh...

Re: Yoshimi plays Widor
I hadn't heard of Widor, but definitely that piece is Bach inspired, nice. And Yosh does a fantastic job of sounding like a real pipe organ. I listened to the same piece on youtube of some real cathedral pipe organs, and Yosh does compete nicely. These big old pipe organs are really fascinating, the...

Re: Midi2usb interfaces
@AutoStatic that looks like the ones I have. I mainly use it to route my keyboard(s) to the computer, say to Yoshimi synth. Works for what I use it for. @42low I have a casio privia weighted 88 keyboard that I use it with. I like that because for an 88key it's pretty light, unlike some of the big he...

Re: Midi2usb interfaces
The inexpensive USB to MIDI adapters I got from ebay(cheap, <10$) work good, no driver required, so there is a standard MIDI USB interface and standard driver. Mine have about a 3 foot USB cable going to a plastic box with activity LED's on it and then split off into 2 midi cables(5-pin DIN connecto...

Re: Reducing Static Noise - Getting an Audio Interface?
You say 48Vpp. This must be a reference to phantom power. Condenser mic's can require a bias operating voltage(phantom power), something like 48v. My better condenser mics require this and I get that from a small mixer that has 'phantom power'. This high voltage is somewhat historic, and often somet...

Re: E-MU Xmidi 2x2 USB/MIDI interface out of the box
a2jmidid pkg? I use this for say qsampler(that only does jack midi, not alsa midi), for routing midi from an external keyboard to qsampler software synth. I recall having to hook the alsa midi in to the 'Midi Through' in qjackctl.

Re: Buyers advice for a novice
Yes, a bit expensive. Chalk it up to experience. It should work great for you. Look on ebay for an inexpensive MIDI to USB cable adapter. I picked a few up for something like $8 each and they work fine. The Yamaha's are good because they have a ton of voices and other features in them. And it will w...

Re: Mr. E's
I liked it. The dropbox dialog is confusing, but after hitting the no thanks at the bottom you get a nice web player that worked fine.

Re: Buyers advice for a novice
I'd suggest looking at the used market. If you are in the US, check out shopgoodwill.com, you can search locally where they can allow local pickup. It's like there own private ebay. I'm kicking myself, there was a Yamaha DGX 205 that just went for $35. Forgot the item was ending today. This has a pi...

https://soundcloud.com/user-507901502/apt-get-world-domination Will wonders never cease?! They finally let me on soundcloud. I've made it to the big time. Here's a quick song to ring in the New Year and bolster the Linux Crew. Maria Caria I hear had a lip sing malfunction last night. I have no excus...

Re: Windows 10... there I said it! Thoughts?
In my day job I have to run Windows 10 as a good indentured servant. It does the basics ok, but I don't like it. It makes me feel dirty. I run Linux at home(mostly) as a revolutionary action targeted at world domination. Unless my spouse has to use the laptop for important stuff like facebook games,...
