Re: Windows VST vs Native Linux plugins in Carla

There is some additional CPU cost, on my Phenom II about 10% per instance. But unless you run a load of VSTs on an older machine, that would not matter really.

Re: Best synths?

I have used music software from the 90s, and have also owned and currently own modulars etc. Still, recently I have been doing almost everything exclusively with the Bitwig internal devices. It's possible to get very creative, and now with the new sampler recently added, advanced sample mangling is ...

Re: Installing Melodyne

The problem might be the copy protection. I have heard that versions without it work quite perfectly with Wine. This is a shame with many programs, preventing Linux users from purchasing :/

Re: vcvrack.com - open source modular

I have destroyed two installations already with apt get autoremove, both times it ended up removing almost every component in the system... So I don't trust that really as a solution to anything. I have stuff always that I simply must have compiled, since it's not available. I'm not familiar with th...

Re: [SOLVED] Is a realtime kernel needed?

Update: I'm not sure what caused those problems back then.

I'm now on Ubuntu 18.04 and M-Audio Profire 2626, and without the low latency kernel I get glitches in the sound. So at least with Firewire the stock kernel is not good. Don't know about a realtime kernel though, I didn't try one yet.

FFADO-mixer and M Audio Profire 2626

How do I install ffado-mixer? If I try to, I get this message: kim@kim-desktop:~$ sudo apt install ffado-mixer-qt4 Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situat...

TC Electronics Impact Twin

Just wanted to report, that the Firewire version of this interface seems to work perfectly these days. A few years ago I had a nightmarish experience with FFADO and Jack, but the new ALSA drivers integrated in the kernel work fine with Jack and low latencies. Only problem is, that the latest version...

Re: vcvrack.com - open source modular

Hi, I'm really new to Linux so maybe to most this is obvious, but: what is the advantage of installing VCV Rack from the KX Studio repositories versus just downloading it from their site. Besides updates handled automatically?

Re: Windows VST2/3 plugins in Carla (revisited)

I have the same problem with Windows VSTs not showing up in the list, in logs I can see: "env: ‘/usr/bin’: Permission denied" several times, I guess when Carla was trying to execute Wine. I'm quite new to Linux, I'm not sure what permissions to set since the user already has permission to ...

Re: [SOLVED] Is a realtime kernel needed?

Anybody running a low latency kernel on Ubuntu 17.10 here? I installed it, and system response like mouse and keyboard became ridiculously slow, keypresses were mostly missed, etc. Otoh I get already under 3ms latency without xruns with stock Ubuntu straight out of the box, so I'm not sure what good...

[SOLVED] Periodic glitch with snd-dice ALSA drivers

[Edit: The problem went away when I rolled back to an older realtime kernel, but I'll leave this here for reference] I have a fresh installation of Ubuntu 17.10 with almost nothing extra installed yet besides Bitwig Studio, Cadence and a few other things from the KX Studio repositories. But I also t...

Re: Native Access

Hmm the Visual C++ 2015 redistributables, as well as some older ones ARE installed. So I copied the missing dlls by hand from my real Windows installation, removed Wine, and installed the latest 2.04rc staging branch, and now I get at least an error message that I filed to Bugzilla... Unhandled exce...

Oh, and I just realized my Linux partition is full, the system didn't warn me of this. I didn't use the installation for a while and I guess the last updates filled everything up. Hmm this might also have caused stuff...
