Re: Backing up my data.. program suggestions?
Another vote for rsync. Grsync (along with many others) is just a GUI frontend for rsync. Rsync is included in all major Linux distros, it is probably already installed. Try man rsync to check. Grsync is nice to learn about all the options, then use a checkbox interface. This is just enabling switch...

Re: Very brief question about Jack
Hi tnob, Jack is a local connection from your computer/hardware/interface/virtual instruments to your software. It can be used over a local network connection, but you probably won't need that for a while.

Re: Would you help me move to Linux? :)
Ubuntu is already much better in the privacy department than Windows. Uninstall that shopping lens (or whatever the correct name is). Win10 by default sends all of your keystrokes (er, I mean 'typing patterns') and has pages of 'anti-privacy' settings that are all on by default. If you just want to ...

Re: JACK over ethernet network?
Thanks Frank, for doing these tests. I have been interested in using Netjack and have been wondering some of the things you are learning. In my example, I have a laptop that is adequate for basic 8 analog channel recordings. I sometimes take it out for a remote recording (small rack for an 1818VSL)....

Re: Sound quality of my productions ?
Hi Gps, it sounds like you are making great progress. I re-read these pages a couple of times and did not see one thing that can make a big difference? How are you inputting MIDI data? Most modern keyboards can send additional MIDI data like velocity (how hard you hit it) and aftertouch (you push do...

Re: PreSounus AudioBox 1818VSL Working in Linux
Thanks to mhartzel for the comprehensive info! I got an 1818vsl a few months ago, an open box/new for $175. I am using KXStudio, starting Jack with Cadence. The main intended use is Ardour4. It shows up fine in Jack, I believe shows as one device. After I had barely gotten it going, I recorded 8 tra...

Re: The K-Guitar: Korg Kaossilator and Guitar Hero Controlle
I keep telling myself I will make another one, but I keep not doing it. I bought a 'pointy guitar' controller, but it will make the 1/4" jack a little different. I got another Les Paul shaped one, I am more familiar with that.

The K-Guitar: Korg Kaossilator and Guitar Hero Controller
I took a plastic Guitar Hero controller apart, and mounted a Korg Kaossilator (a touchpad synth) inside of it. There was an Instructables story about it, but I added a few things. Lest you say "bah, that's just making a holder for a Kaossilator", notice that the neck switches of the Guitar...

Re: How do you set up your working space? Any special furnit
Real studio furniture looks great (I've never had any). My experience is hobby level home use. If you are wood-working enabled you can probably make something that will be best for you. I've cobbled together U-shaped arrangements, pushed racks (back in the days of hardware effects!) over by the tabl...

Re: Data recovery!
Necro-posting here. An easy mnemonic to remember this is: Raising Skinny Elephants Is Utterly Boring. edit: the SysReq key is often disguised as 'PrintScreen'. Sometimes an app can misbehave, making normal control impossible. If the capslock or numlock still work, it's still alive under there. This ...

Hi all. New here, but otherwise old.
As mentioned earlier, all the good search hits go here, so I need to join properly. I'm from the midwest USA, was a farmer (corn/wheat/beans/cows) for 25 years, now I've been a network guy for the last 15. I've been online since 1981, erased my last NTFS partitions in 1999, all Linux all the time. M...
