You may be right. I have just installed the 64-bit version of Reaper and wineasio is now working OK. 64-bit Reaper hasn't complained about any of my 32-bit VST plugins yet, so it looks like going 64-bit is the best option.

I've just installed Carla plus the two bridge packages, I've specified where my Windows VSTs are in the preferences, and I've refreshed the plugin list, but none of my VSTs have appeared in the list. What am I doing wrong?

It is: options->preferences->audio->"close audio devices when stopped and application is inactive"

Very often Reaper, connected using Wineasio, disappears from (or fails to appear at all in) the Qjackctl patch bay. It is still connected to Jack since I still get sound from the speakers, but I can't connect it to other Jack clients because I can't see it. Is there anything I can do about this?
