Maybe useful info. First I'll give Rosegarden and Ardour a new spin but maybe for others I'll post 2 links of 2 commercial apps running under wine really good. Energy XT and Reaper:

I tried them, they work fine but I had a few xruns with them. EnergyXT comes in a linux version FWIW :)
I think quite a few ppl try to use them as a VST host.

Exactly, they can use there vst's with Energy XT and/or with reaper without going the DSSI-VST route. Also it's an alternative for nice automation of midi data without having to bounce your tracks to Ardour via eg Rosegarden.
