I've been thinking a bit about wikis. The one here has some useful information, but doesn't seem to get updated much. I've found it a general problem that a lot of on-line information on Linux audio is out of date. If you search for something like 'linux midi' you are likely to find pages from many years ago. A lot has changed since then. For anyone new to this area it can be hard to find information on how to get started. Obviously this forum is a very useful resource, but I see a need for more good reference material.
I know there are a few other forums and wikis in other language, but I have not looked too closely at these yet. Chrome does a fairly good job of translation.
Sites I've found include:
http://www.linux-sound.org/ Comprehensive list of apps, but out of date
http://wiki.linuxaudio.org/ Some good stuff here. A lot of it links to external sites, which I don't see as a problem
http://www.linuxjournal.com/users/dave-phillips Lots of great articles
http://opensourcemusician.com/ The main Linux audio podcast I've found. Some info on the wiki and an active IRC channel
http://www.alsa-project.org/ It lists supported hardware, but doesn't recommend what you should use
What I'd like to see in a wiki are pages on specific topics and applications that give guidance on how to set up a working music system. This could be via links to useful blog posts and videos as well as on the wiki itself.
I'm happy to contribute to such a project, but it needs some collaboration. Decisions need to be made on general structure and standardising layout. I have more experience with Mediawiki as I use it at work.
Any thoughts?
