Maybe promote linuxmusicians too. With for example the 'LinuxMusician of the year'. This could be in coorporation with linuxaudio.org, LAM, LinuxMAO and others...

Musicians who make music with FOSS software will be candidate..

Or album of the year
Application of the year
Developer of the year
etc.

If you guys are cool with it, I'll figure out a way we can do official nominations, votes, etc. I also think we should include LM artists from our own board too.

Okay I have been thinking about how to accomplish this...and I guess it may be too late to do 2008 awards, but we can get cracking on how we'd like to do 2009.

Logistically, I'm thinking we could open up a nominations forum, one topic for each nomination. We can easily tally nominations that way to get, say, the top 4 or something, and then run those four as a poll for voting.

Now what about topics? Album of the year, Artist of year, App of the year?

I'm in doubt whether we want such a competition element... Music and competition is a bad combination imho...

If we go forward with this idea, how do you suggest we choose?

I'm not in a very creative mood right now... But maybe it's nice to give an 'award' to an artist who did something special, creative, original, good for the Linux audio community or something...

And maybe a developer or team who created a 'breakthrough' or did some or more things very valuable for the community...

I don't know...seems like something the community would vote on, rather than just arbitrary designation. Since we're already making decent headway past 2008 I think we may want to table this for now, and bring then bring it up later this year to discuss any recognition we'd like to give for 2009.

Maybe people can nominate a artist, user or developer according to some criteria and then let people vote...
But those criteria should be more broader then just 'best album of the year' imho...
But maybe it is something for 2010?

edit: seems that we are not the only ones thinking of awards:

I think we better bundle forces...
