How about openSuse?

What other apps and distros do you use to round out your studio?

How about openSuse?

Post by Lemen »

If I search the forum, I do not find much about openSuse.
I do like openSuse a lot for the normal things, but how good is openSuse for music? ( with XFCE or LXDE of course)

Any experiences here?

Just curious, but what's so bad about rpm? I've been a RedHat user since the consumer release days so rpm is all I've really known. What am I missing out on?

I think times have changed. Yum handles the dependencies now.

If I want to install a package I type "yum install <package name>" and it resolves the dependencies for me. Suppose I don't know the name of the package but I know I need the one that provides a certain library. I type "yum whatprovides */libraryname.so", to get a listing of every package that provides that library. This isn't everything but times have changed from the days of tracking down endless dependencies by hand.

I can't speak for OpenSuse though. I didn't know it was still around.

rpm and deb are both just fine. And OpenSuSE has a similar automated package facility like Ubuntu's PPA's: https://build.opensuse.org/
Not sure how they compare though, I've never used OpenSuSE's Build Service. I get the idea that OpenSuSE is gaining popularity, at least in these regions.

Thanks for the input. Thanks for the link Jeremy.
It seems there is not much experience with openSuse.
I think I give it a change at a partition at the computer. I will see were it ends or the trouble start.
