developers' section

Postby raboof » Sat Oct 11, 2008 2:11 pm

I wonder if it'd be worth it to add a developers' section.

Of course there's the LAD mailinglist allready, but it's relatively high-volume (>2 messages per day)

I was thinking about it to. But I think it's the LAD mailinglist is better for it... and the situation wouldn't be better with two places for development. I think the task for linuxmusicians is to discuss problems and pass them to the LAD mailinglist or the specific app boards...

If there are enough developers that want to meet here, I don't have a problem with it.

Its nice if people get enthusiastic for software audio development and I think there are more then one here. But IMHO it shouldn't be isolated from the LAD list.

But for beginners a forum is maybe a good and 'safe' place...

Why not move this topic viewtopic.php?f=4&t=420 to Music and FOss advocacy and open their another topic about programming...
If in the future these topics get booming, we could open a special part for it.. For now I think it fits in Music and Foss advocacy, with a few topics about development.

edit: mmhh why not open a developers' section? ;)
If 'we' decide to open it I would like to see a sort of message like we have in the 'rehearsel room' about copyright, which points to the fact that there is a LAD mailinglist and a #lad IRC channel...
something like
'we want to make you aware of the fact that there is also a linux audio development mailinglist (LAD mailinglist) and a IRC channel (#lad@freenode), moderated by linuxaudio.org.
.... or something like that

I think the developers section should have an less central place on this forum board, and the parts for making music/ linux musicians (software, hardware, musicians area, producers area a central place...

Maybe a section with one forum part below 'the producers area' ?
Linux audio software developers section... or is there a better term for audio more related to musician and music making?

I actually think a developer's area is a good idea. The only reason I'm holding off at the moment is because so far, only 2 people have responded on this thread. LM is starting to stabilize in terms of fora and organization so I'd like to refrain from introducing a whole new section if there's just not very much interest.

So please, respond to this thread if you're interested in developer's area here at LM!

I agree, especially with that 'upcoming devs' part... It could be a nice starting point for upcoming devs...
But I think it will be good to say something like
'there is also a linux audio devs mailinglist which you can find here:link'

I think we should keep this as central as possible, but especially a forum part is good for young and new devs...

I think this post with 100(!) replies is basically a call for a developers' section

@ Nathan

Thanks for adding.

Two comments:

I would create a special 'area' for it (like musicians' corner) to give it a good spot and 'isolate' it from the rest.
I would put that section below musicians' corner.

The devs section doesn't fit really well in 'stuff that doesn't fit anywhere else' and not below backstage IMHO...

Maybe you can move some threads to the devs zone: for example that thread I mentioned in my previous post.

EDIT: Nice solution for the podcast forum! I was thinking maybe you can make 'Your Studio & Gear' also an subforum in 'The Producer's Area' or in 'hardware'. It is a bit to much to have a special forum part for your studio and gear, and maybe only a sticked thread is to less... so a subforum would be a good solution. It will safe space, which 'we' can use for the devs zone.
