I'd be happy to do that! I could use some help maybe. My overall goal is to figure out how to make it as easy as possible to guide people through the process I've been through, all clearly documented. I appreciated the documentation that already exists, but some of it was really confusing. Most of it assumes people are already GNU/Linux users. On the other hand, I'm trying to approach the idea of KXStudio and audio as one notable reason to actually try GNU/Linux, so I'm coming from the complete newbie to then trying to run KXStudio…

Hello again & thanks for the replies,

I'm still tired, can't figure out for sure if the live DVD has come out yet or not...but when it does I will at least give it a proper try since I see many on this thread find it works nicely. If I do choose to go with the Ubuntu Studio then add KXstudio repo route, just wondering if I am loosing out in terms of stability, support, or increase of latencies...

I am just concerned since I have strange and annoying issues on my present hybrid system (Ubuntu Studio and Tango studio repo + kernel). Of course it gets complicated since we are talking firewire, thus which ffado driver I use and which firewire stack I use and then which version of gladish etc...

About xruns, I thought PulseAudio was the culprit, but from an earlier post in this thread:
...
Currently Debian/Ubuntu builds some apps with debug on which makes them slower and more prone to xruns

so this may also have been a factor? In that case, glad to know that debug mode is switched off for the latest KX Studio![/quote]

BTW falkTX, thanks for all your dedication and hard work, I'm amazed how alot of these important projects are developed often by only few or one individual...and in some time I'd like to donate if I can...

hey hissthesky7,
the Live-DVD is not out yet. I'm finishing the last Carla pieces right now, and give the whole Cadence suite a final test run before pushing it into the repos. (the 'Cadence' app won't be updated just yet though).

afaik, the way you install KXStudio is not relevant at all.
What matters is what Desktop and soundcard(s) you use.
Sadly I never used firewire once in my life, so I have to rely on others to tell me if it's working or not.

It's true Debian (and thus Ubuntu) has some software built with debug on (I've catched Qtractor, Patchage, Mixxx and others). I find this very sad :(
PulseAudio can also cause some xruns if you run at low latency. The upcoming alsa2jack bridge using alsa_in/out will allows us to get rid of pulseaudio completely.

So the new full updated KXStudio will have the alsa2jack bridge?

When done, but it will take time. It's on my plans, but probably not yet this week.
The first ISO won't have this, but future releases will.

In addition to kwin, jackdbus, and a2jmidi bridge totaling up to 0.9% of CPU resources, PulseAudio uses more than 3.5%, which can total up to 5%. This is with a 10 ms latency.

My CPU is AMD A6-3400 Quad Core APU (Accelerated Processing Unit). If I recall, the max CPU speed is 1.4GHz. I could use some CPU boost if I could turn off two out of four cores, though.

Pick the most cpu intensive tasks you commonly perform, and devise
a few tests, get a stopwatch, and use htop to watch how the cpu cores
get used in the different modes. I use some cpu munching synth sound,
it can destroy a pair of 2 ghz cores in seconds.

You could add more and more instances of rakarrack to a drum pattern,
or render a large movie with filters, whatever your usual workflow would yield.

Pushed the latest changes to carla&claudia to the repositories, so now it's time for the ISO!
There was an issue with the boot-theme I couldn't figure out how to fix (Ubuntu logo shown instead of KXStudio), but everything else works in the Live-DVD.
Uploading right now, filezilla reports 10h left...

iz,
Thanks for the link, this is like Christmas! If you create a torrent, post the link and I'll seed too. Hooray, indeed!

EDIT: I got total boot failure in Virtualbox and LiveDVD mode . . . anyone else have success booting the ISO?

Please don't, I haven't even finished uploading the ISO!!
What you have is not the entire thing, it will break!

Please wait until I make the proper announcement
(PS: I will take off your torrent link so no one clicks on it)

Sorry, I didn't think it even showed up in sourceforge until it was all there. Thought 1.1G seemed a little small  My bad. I didn't even test it, it was so late when I finished I just thought I'd help save people from the 40k/s download

no problem, blame my super slow internet upload speed...
