KXStudio FAQ

Postby falkTX » Fri May 04, 2012 12:30 am

This topic answers the most Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q.) about KXStudio.
Feel free to reply with a new question, but please keep it short.

Is KXStudio 12.04 ready (as in gold/final release)?
Yes. The available ISO is now very outdated though. A new release will be made soon.

How do I install KXStudio?
You can install via live ISO, net-boot ISO, or install Ubuntu (or variant) first and then upgrade to KXStudio.
I personally recommend installing UbuntuStudio first, then upgrade.
Both install methods are documented here - http://kxstudio.sourceforge.net/Documentation.
(When using UbuntuStudio as base, please use the XFCE Desktop meta instead of the default KDE)

Will KXStudio packages for Lucid, Natty or Oneiric be updated?
No. Cadence & tools will not work there (needs python3), and I can't test how things work there (already in 12.04).
Still, if you want to see a specific app updated, please ask.

Should I use 32bit or 64bit?
If your computer supports 64bit - use it!
The new Ubuntu 12.04 now properly supports muti-arch, which means that you can now even install a 32bit deb package in a 64bit system. Also, most libraries are now multi-arch ready, Flash runs in 64bit, Wine works too, there's no real reason not use it.
(KXStudio is missing lmms+vst on 64bit right now, but they will be re-added at some time)

Will KXStudio support <insert-Desktop-here>?
Yes, but only if you help. It's not that hard, but requires some work, testing and patience (from you).
PM me if you feel like you can do the job (but be sure you're motivated enough to do it!)

a) When I install from the PPAs, there's always a list of stuff that couldn't be installed, and I'm asked if I'd like to do a partial upgrade. Is this a normal result of mods to the PPAs, or should I worry?

b) re. Live DVD, What if I don't like KDE (or whatever the default desktop is)? Can I change it to something else after the install?

[Glad to see this thread; New Ubuntu LTS + KXStudio + documentation + impending Windows 8 trainwreck = good times for music in linux. ; ) ]
Acer Aspire 5742, Intel Core i3 370M @ 2.40GHz, 4.00 GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 532MHz, Intel(R) HD Graphics, Alesis iO4 audio device.

Consider this a bug, it shouldn't happen. Currently it's broken because of LMMS, sorry about that. Should in auto-fixed in later today.

I recommend to use UbuntuStudio as base if you don't want KDE. Mixing Desktops can work but it's not very practical.

not sure if these questions fit in the FAQ though, but being the 2nd post I think it's good enough (users will see this easily)

Will you continue updating KXStudio packages for Natty (11.04)?

I know this isn't totally KXStudio specific, but people will ask:

Is there any reason not to go 64 bit if the hardware supports it?

Will there still be a desktop meta package for gnome in the 12.04? Would like to be able to use Mint 13 once it's released. They still haven't said which will be the default DE, but it will either be MATE(Gnome 2 fork) or Cinnamon(Gnome-shell based).

nice one. I'll add a generic question about this.
short answer - PM me if interested on doing work and testing on this (you'll be the tester of said DE, and report/fix issues)

Can you add the M-Audio MidiSport firmware to your upcoming DVD release?

Code: Select all
apt-get midisport-firmware

@falktx - It's also used to get M-Audio keyboards and controllers working. I use it with my old Radium keyboard. No config needed the package does what it's supposed to and the firmware get loaded automagically.

Just to clarify, festige can NOT be installed on 64bit precise as of the moment? Should the dssi-vst:i386 and festige-backend:i386 be installable as an alternative?

festige *can* be installed on 64bit, dssi-vst cannot (so it will use the internal fst backend)

As I already have Ubuntu Studio 12.04 installed, will I "lose" anything by upgrading to KXStudio? Or is it just new things are are integrated into it?

Also, I think Ubuntu Studio is Gnome DE by default. Is it recommended to move to XFCE or KDE during the upgrade?

Thanks.
