Windows software alternatives

Postby eikakot » Wed Mar 21, 2012 5:39 am

I have made a website a couple of years ago which aims to help to find Linux software alternatives to Windows, but it was mainly used only by lithuanian Linux community and I didn't have time to update it very often. But I have now :) Here is the link http://awesomecow.com I hope it could be useful for you guys. And if you know (and I am sure you do) applications that are not in the database, please use this form to improve the website http://awesomecow.com/prisidek/index.php?k=en and do not hesitate to contact me if you have any suggestions

Good idea! Like it!
The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair.

Cool idea. Just a few comments:
  • I noticed a spelling mistake on the submission form 'Linux program desription'.
  • There is no obvious way to get between that page and the actual main search.
  • Can one Linux program be associated with multiple Windows programs? E.g. Ardour for Reaper, Protools...
  • How can a program description be updated?

It would be good to get all the Linux audio apps on there.

1) Fixed that.
2 ) There is a link at the top left corner to go back to the main search and a link to that suggestions form is in the about page.
3) Yes
4) Do you want to update the description you have already submited?

Wow, that was quick. Did you just add a load of apps? I tried putting in a line about Ardour, but now there's a lot more.

I'm unclear on what the Rating stars do. Clicking on a star doesn't appear to do anything, but when I refresh it says I have rated. Should there be a Confirm button?

Ardour was already in the database. I just needed to pair it with reaper.
I wrote this rating script in ajax so it should work without reloading the page.

Great job you've done. Here is one suggestion for improvement. You can add a filter for free software only applications, because some users didn't consider "wine friendly" applications as real linux alternatives
