hip hop / making beats

Post by studio32 »

Hi,

I'm looking for software which I (or a friend) can use for making beats for hip hop / rap music.
It should be easy to learn software with gui and as much click 'n run as possible!

Are there hip hop musicians who use linux for making music?

the question is not fully answered yet... didn't find an hip hop artist who uses linux....
But this are some software tips I got:

- Freecycle (beatslicer)) Interesting tool also for musicians who make other styles
- Hydrogen
- Linuxsampler
- seq24 + specimen
- REnoise (?)
- LMMS (FL studio for linux)
- Freewheeling

And interesting post of Esben on the LAU mailinglist
Seems I'm the only one;). I haven't released anything of my own music,
though someone else has released something with me on it;), but I'm
now making my own beats with supercollider. I do scheduling in SC,
which I control with MIDI controllers. I also try to synthesize drums
in SC, but moving more towards CLM. I'm not into drum samples, though
I use a great deal since I'm a little wack with making my drum sounds,
for now;). I try to synthesize my drums and I see light in the end of
the tunnel.

I have some two year old code on my web site, if you're interested in
going this route.

I'm a child of wu-tang, so you know what direction I'm going in. I
also rap.

from LAU list:

Hi all,

You'll find the Hip-Hop + Rap + contributions from Chris McCormick at:

http://philippe.hezaine.free.fr/spip.php?article31

WARNING: I changed the equivalences of dynamics by default in Lilypond.
In the README.txt there is a copy of the new table.
And i included the new midi.scm.
It's for those who want to recompile some patterns.

Have fun.

when i stablish my linux system i will start production sessions. and i will post some tutos to make hip hop beats in linux at the end.
i am having a bit of troubles with the system sound and the stability of the system. (i'm not understanding well the jack and alsa devices) i will post my doubtes in the correct place tomorrow.

At the moment i goona use:
-Rosegarden
-Ardour gtk2
-Hydrogen
-Freecycle
-Zinaddsubfx
-Lmms for some things
and all what can be usefoul in concrett moments.
i will try renoise too but is it a demo? it remembers me a sequencer existing in the nintendo ds homebrews, Nitrotracker's named. but that fisrt with more quality and more but more functions.

ok thats all for today

Beatslicing with the command tool:
aubiocut is great. Does exactly what I needed, except for one thing --
the filenames for the slices are too long for my MPC1000. I wrote a
bash script to get around this. It copies the sample to be chopped to
/tmp and does the chopping there. It then copies the slice files back
over to where you called the script from renamed in 8.3 format using the
first 3 chars of the original filename plus a '0'-padded sample number,
i.e. the first slice chopped from sample.wav would be sam00001.wav.

Usage: chopup <filename.wav>

#!/bin/bash
#
# chopup
# Dan Richert (http://t.dnlr.net/)
# 01/17/2009

cwd=`pwd`
bn=`basename $1`
id="$RANDOM$RANDOM"
idbn="$id$bn"
cp $1 /tmp/$idbn

cd /tmp
aubiocut -i $idbn -c -L -q

c="1"
pad="00000"
for seg in `ls $id* |grep -v ^$idbn$`; do
let "padding = ${#pad} - ${#c}"
cp $seg $cwd/${bn:0:3}${pad:0:$padding}$c.wav
rm $seg
let "c = $c + 1"
done

rm $idbn

# End of script

Im a hiphop artist That's interested and have been looking at a linux alternative..
I haven't had a full look at freecycle... but looks similar to recycle...
there's the linux sampler. But it looks to complicated for chopping/rephrasing samples/loops
hydrogen is really good for just drums..(I used fruity loops bak in the day..)

Ardour is superb for tracking....
I have made stuff with ardour but was using the mpc1000 for chopping. and tracking it live into ardour.(Overdubbing each chopped pgm) Then using live bass a guitar

The reason i have yet to delve into linux yet is the amount of time you have to spend getting it working....
what i'm looking for...

A program that can record samples in and then replay it, slice it. assignd each slice to midi notes via midi controller(learn function)or the slices are assigned in fixed order from c1 upwards..

Have to go the misses is jumping on my back about going to a bday party....

I am so glade you asked this question better than I did because no one replied to mine because I asked for a Linux version or answer to Sonic Producer..

this is what I do:
I get free kits from here,
http://freedrumkits.net/
put together kits in Hydrogen and with the piano roll added, you can create serious beats...
Also I you LMMS with them....(Linux's fruityloop)
Edit tracks in Ardour..

I think fruity loops in one of the main ones for making hip hop.

If you need quick but professional beats then try - DUBturbo - http://soulful-keys.com/software-review.html

hezekiah74 yeah, that was the other WIndows software I was looking for an equivalent to... Thanx... I think it runs online too like Sonic Producer... LMMS and Hydrogen are my answers for now...

I just had a quick squiz at renoise website... Has a new slicer tool built in(not free.. But only 58 euro) Exactly like free cycle/recycle/fruity slicer.. Each slice is auto mapped to midi notes... has adsr (not sure if its each slice separate of for the whole sliced pgm) If you have 58 euro.. I'd def give this a look...
I still wanna be able to get something happening with all free(non paid) software... Just because a lot of hiphop heads i know haven't got the money to pay for stuff..(or refuse to...Most hiphop guys i know grow up stealing.. Taking.. Jacking.. blah blah) .. I think renoise looks like the linux hiphop candidate now... I'm gonna purchase it...

Had a look at renoise.. If you make hiphop(or any sample manipulation based music) or want to on the linux platform This is definately the one. the slicer that is built in is really good. Slices are mapped(midi notes) as you slice..
Once you learn the short cuts, its actually really fast and a great work flow...( i use maschine but i've been looking for a linux alternative other than hydrogen.. Or freecycle.. Basically renoise is both of those together ...
I'd explain it as a sampler sequencer mod tracker..

The demo limits you with certain things like rendering your piece as a wav file..and i think plugin support is disabled aswell.. But you can jack it into something like ardour and do a 'realtime bounce' You can also setup multiple routings to jack if you want to mix in ardour. The demo still lets you save your project aswell.

Plus 58 euro is really a steal for what you can actually do with it...I'm def gonna buy it. As soon as reaper is in linux, I'll be using that and renoise together ...

I've actually got DubTurbo running on Linux...($40.00 CAD)..
cross platform cause it uses Adobe AIR so it can run on all 3 platforms...

it was the software I was looking for.. my studio partner bought it for his Mac and WIndows setup and I asked if I could try in on Linux... well it runs well... now to see or find out how to run it with jack... Actually I do know how, it needs lib32-jack or something... I'm running 64bit for all my other apps so ain't messing... Renoise or any tracker drives me nuts because I have no clue on how they work... I've got cheese tracker and a few others and not once have I got a sound out of any...

Yeah I avoided trying out renoise because of the tracker thing, but the difference really is that it scrolls down instead of left to right... (imagine lmms or fruity loops but the step sequencer is vertical)

The way it handles samples and instruments is kinda awkward at first... you have your sample/instrument list , and what ever sample/instrument is selected that is what will be recorded on the track that is selected.(i.e. kd1 (kickdrum1) can be triggered on different tracks having different track dsp settings) So yo don't assign samples/instruments to tracks, instead they(samples/instruments) can be triggered on any track at any time.

I've just bought a echo mia to install in a old desktop puter i have that doesn't get used anymore. Was gonna setup renoise on that with a novation xstation25(the analog outputs busted on the xstation) I'll post my efforts of a hiphop beat with it when finished....
