KXStudio 10.04.2 is out!

Postby falkTX » Thu Apr 15, 2010 4:58 pm

KXStudio it's a GNU/Linux Operative System based on Ubuntu.
It's aimed at artists, producers, musicians as well as regular users.
Like Ubuntu, it has very strong security, it's easy to use and it's free of charge!

You can get more information at the website: http://kxstudio.sourceforge.net/

What makes KXStudio special?
1) The Repositories (https://launchpad.net/~falk-t-j/+archive/lucid) - this is probably the biggest thing about it.
2) Full 64bit support - You can now run pretty much any 32bit app in a 64bit system!
3) Jack2 and integration with pulseaudio, no need to stop Jack at anytime now;
4) VSTs are available pre-installed. More are available to download via internet at the KDE System Settings;
5) Easy to configure - Audio Paths, Default Applications, Permissions, etc (all in System Settings too);
6) KDE based, giving you the best DE for Linux.
7) Full LADI support

KXStudio comes pre-configured with these settings:
- black theme (gnome compatibile)
- all audio apps outputs to Jack (alsa, pulse, portaudio and phonon-xine)
- custom Multimedia menu, with subdivided categories
- customized applications settings for the best experience (dolphin with "go up", nepomuk enabled but strigi not, etc)

At the time of writing, 32bit and 64bit Live and Netboot ISOs are available.
Downloads page: http://kxstudio.sourceforge.net/downloads/

For bugs, check the develop tab in the KXStudio website.
Comments are welcome.

Hi falk

I couldn't found a application list for KXStudio.
Would be nice if you could add information about with applications you have included.
Did KXStudio run as live CD/Dvd also ?

Haven't the time now to download and check your new distribution, but it seems to be a great good work.

respect brummer

The app list - Cool idea, I'll do it soon.
The only available download is a liveDVD 64bit.

I tested the live DVD yesterday. I looks promising, but running from the dvd was really slow. Nothing like AVlinux for example, which runs very well in comparison. (KDE's fault maybe?) I'll try installing it later though, to see how it really performs. :)

Just noticed a "bug" - after installation there's no sound, because Jack2 has not been configured yet (it uses 'dummy' output as default :( )

To fix it, run in a terminal (F12):
Code: Select all
mkdir -p ~/.config/jack/
nano ~/.config/jack/conf.xml

Then copy and paste (using Ctrl+Shift+V) this text:
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<jack>
<engine>
<option name="driver">alsa</option>
<option name="realtime">true</option>
</engine>
<drivers>
<driver name="alsa">
<option name="rate">44100</option>
<option name="nperiods">3</option>
</driver>
</drivers>
</jack>

Now run:
Code: Select all
kxstudio-session-start -restart

and the audio will be fixed

Thanks for the time testing it out!

You can try to install it in a 2Gb USB to make it faster:
Launch the dvd, and in the start menu click 'Apps' -> 'System' -> 'Startup Disk Creator'.
Select the KXStudio ISO on the top and a USB stick on the bottom and click 'Make Startup Disk'.
That will make KXStudio run almost as fast as in a HDD.

There's an old 32bit available at the sourceforge page, but that's ...old.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/kxstudio/files/

I'm just saving space and time before the final version.
I don't think that uploading many big files is good to sourceforge.
It also takes me around 5hrs for 1 ISO upload, you know...

When the final version is released, we'll have:
- Live DVDs
- Alternate DVDs (install package-by-package)
- Net-Boot CDs (11Mb size)
All of them both 32bit and 64bit, making a total of ~7.5Gb

The list of applications is now available:
http://kxstudio.sourceforge.net/index.p ... &Itemid=15

I've just noticed some (almost critical) bugs in KXStudio Beta2, so I removed the downloads for now.
I'm currently working on fixing everything possible so the final release is complete shortly after Ubuntu 10.04 is out.

Net-boot ISOs will be available sooner though, for those who can't wait.

I've become a bit of a KDE fan (though right now I use Openbox on top of KDE). When you squash the bugs I'll definitely give it a look see. 8) The screenshots look great!

Thanks.
I should be able to pull the netboot ISOs today.

Good News!
Ubuntu 10.04 has been released.
All bugs I could find are now fixed.

This means KXStudio will have final LiveDVDs soon. I just need to wait for everything to compile on the PPA and then I'll make the ISOs (Live 32bit/64bit and Alternate 32bit/64bit).

The netboot ISOs are already available for those who want it fast (although the installation will take longer).

See ya soon

Thank you for this falktx!

Just one problem: It boots (running in Virtualbox) and after going through the wizard, my desktop is gone, so I created the panel and widgets myself. This is not a problem, but my jack output doesn't work. The .config/jack/conf.xml file is there. How can I fix this?

The empty desktop was a problem that is now fixed, a recent install will not have it.

About the jack output, does the file contains exactly a copy-paste of my previous comment?
Can you go to "system-settings" -> "multimedia" and check if the output is set to Jack?
(If not, make it the 1st, click below 'Apply Device List To..." and check all, then click apply.)
