I haven't given up at all... I know you know what you're talking about GMaq so I will eagerly await the release of Arch stock version of 2.6.36... actually the lqx from Arch is 13... and by tomorrow or the next day, the current version will be available...

I have become acutely interested in this topic after having read Linus'
endorsement of the kernel patch mentioned, however, more research
is needed. I will post some results to this thread as they are achieved.

have tried it here, too....without experiencing this.

but i din't see any diference for latancy to the the .35, this with my "vst-test"....but I guess i reached a point where min latancy is limited by my HD-speed

you beat me to the posting... I was just about to mention it...
It could be my snd-hda-intel card but it worked fine with 2.6.35...

GMaq, any updates with you and the kernel?

I wonder if the Liquorix gives any usefull diferences over that for us audio-people.....only info i can find is:
"Liquorix is a distro kernel replacement built using the best configuration and kernel sources for desktop, multimedia, and gaming workloads."

the xruns are crazy. Nah, didn't mention any thing in the forum... I'll wait for an update but I think it's my snd-hda-intel....
I will try with my old pc...

Hi,

I've opened up a testing thread on my forum and built an optional PAE version and so far no complaints. In my own testing I can run my onboard craptel HDA at 32fpp no hiccups, I am also seeing improved latency with M-Audio 1010LT's including running 2 of them with pcm_multi. It also works good with my old Tascam US-122 (it doesn't like -rt) and curiously I can run JACK in virtualbox at half the fpp I used to. I also have good reports on firewire devices and the new stack....

OTOH Regarding Intel HDA, I have a DELL laptop with one that won't run anything beyond JACK 0.116 without xruns like crazy, it didn't work with 2.6.31.12-rt21 and it doesn't work with this Kernel either. Other HDA chips run like lightning, Unfortunately all HDA are not created equal. That's all I can add for now...

On my new computer I tried the stock 2.6.36 ARCH kernel with my fast track pro soundcard and couldn't get it to run without xruns like with my old computer. Haven't tried with rt kernel yet though.

for some reason, some soundcard ran amazingly with 2.6.35 ARCH.... I compared it to the 2.6.33-rt and was no difference but now I've tried 3 different 2.6.36 and all gives maddening xruns so it must be the soundcards.

I agree,

Hardware and Kernels aren't always as simple as using -rt or not, I use M-Audio 1010LTs on my main recording computer and I have never really been terribly happy with their latency performance with -rt Kernels even my own AV Linux config, Curiously Kernel 2.6.30 as a lowlatency preempt would run them like lightning and now 2.6.36 also behaves very nicely with them neither of which are -rt. If 2.6.35 is working keep using it, if the improvements or new drivers support in any given kernel don't benefit you there is absolutely no reason to update. I think in a DAW situation changing the Kernel should be a very carefully considered option.

it's the snd-hda-intel crap card in my laptop... I just got my old pc AMD 2000+xp 1.7 GB going and this freakin' kernel (stock 2.6.36 ARCH) rocks....
I had guitarix with IR file loaded and Ardour loaded with a few stereo tracks at 5.33 msec latency and absolutely, I repeat, absolutely no xruns.... this is a slow pc that I've been fight with for years and the RT kernels have been great on it and sound stock ARCH kernels but not like this one...WOW!!

dunno if y'all seen this yet but it was posted in the Arch ProAudio forum. This sound promising:

That patch is close to useless for pro-audio related stuff. The author of PulseAudio condensed this whole patch down to a 4 line Bash script btw.
