Jack not finding M-Audio Fast Track device

Tango Studio 64bit version installed! Getting ready to update with Synaptic.....or maybe I will get this stuff working first. Alright I am working the stuff you posted above first. Too anxious to get my guitar howling. Thanks and will update.

Once synaptic finishes updates install their RT kernel, which is pre-compiled with the Fast Track Pro patch.

sudo apt-get install linux-realtime

sudo apt-get install linux-headers-realtime

I had a small problem with one package not installing but I think it was my internet connection flaking out. Just in case, keep an eye on the terminal output for messages about anything not installing.

Then follow my instructions from before to get and modify the Fast-Track-Pro-.conf file and modify your Qjackct settings.

Then reboot and everything should work!

I actually got to the gksudo gedit /etc/modprob.d/fast-track-pro.conf step and it brings up a blank document. Now, I can mouse click thru "Computer" >etc>modprobe.d and the file comes up fine. Is there something I am missing here?

I might have spelled something wrong...

I actually cd'ed to the modprobe folder and it worked. My old Linux troubleshooting skills coming back slowly . One thing I did notice though about the config file is that by default there was only 1 line. I basically copied what you had that the final result should look like. So, now setting up Jack.

Okay setup Jack but just noticed the volume icon on the desktop is x'ed. When I click on it, it say

"The volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right Gstreamer plugins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured."


But I'm getting sound from Jack which is the point. Just opened Rackarack and my guitar went totally white nolse. Sounds like a bad connection, but that is not it. Does this need configed?

Hmm, you can probably ignore that (jack doesn't depend on the Volti volume control) but it is curious.

Do you have an on board sound card in addition to the fast track pro?

As I play around with all the volume controls between my guitar, fast track and speakers it is getting much better. In fact that was probably a false alert. Okay, now I guess I need to read up on Rackarack. As I click on the various effects I get no change in sound. Likewise I open a track in Ardour and start to record and get dead air on playback.

My theory is just that you haven't routing the audio correctly through jack--remember jack is like patch cables between instruments and amps etc, if you don't connect them with cables.... nothings going to play!

Everything looks alright so far. Although you might want to increase the Frames/Period in Qjackct settings from 128 to something higher to get rid of your xruns.

Can you post the connect window of Qjackct again but this time with everything expanded.

One other thing to check. On your Fast Track Pro make sure the knob labelled "Mix" is turned at least partway to the right. If it is all the way to the left the headphones just monitor what is coming into the input directly and ignore everything coming back from the computer (aka ardour and rackarack playback).

Yeah, the mix is to the right. Here is the output. Do you have to click play in Rackarack to have the effects come on? I select them but no change in my guitar sound.

I don't use rackarack (a little resource intensive for my computer and I'm not a big effects guy) so I don't know much about it. However, looking at it quickly it looks like the must important thing is to click the F/X on button in the upper left hand corner.

Thanks, that's what it was.............not feeling too swift last night. The main thing then is recording and playing back which both Rackarack and Ardour act like they are doing, but when I go to playback........I get nothing.

I think it's probably just a routing problem of some sort. I cannot highly enough recommend reading through the Ardour FLOSS manual which is essential a hands on tutorial to quickly introduce all the main features of the program.

You want to make sure in ardour to: a)make a new audio track, b)set the input of that audio track to the output of rackarack, c) set the output of the audio track to the master buss and d) set the output of the master bus to system_playback

If you go through the FLOSS Manual you will learn how to do all of this and more in probably no more than an hour.
